Overcoming Farming Challenges: Stuck in Sugar Sand

Pushing hay since the trailer didn’t make it!

Did you ever hear that the best made plans are useless because I lived it this last month. Buying Hay for our animals is our largest expense each month and so we are always on a hunt for the best deal for the best quality and I think I found it!

What I didn’t plan for was a stressful night of getting a F350, my Nissan Armada, a 1200lbs trailer and a lawnmower stuck in sugar sand. If you aren’t from Florida you may not encounter sugar sand that often, it basically feel like the softest sand you could ever encounter. Which is great if you are at the beach but feels like those 1980’s childhood quicksand nightmares I had as a child if it’s in your pasture.

Yup, the hay trailer got stuck. In fact everything got stuck. Our past deliveries were only 2 or 3 round bails at most, on a small trailer with a small truck. We knew which areas to avoid but this time that didn’t matter. The truck alone was so heavy the tires managed to just spin into holes. One idea after the next and nothing seemed to help. (See previous statement of all the other items we got stuck) Luckily the woman delivering was amazing, her husband came out with a smaller truck and chains and managed to get everything out.

Farming can go from really amazing to a total disaster in less than five minutes and that was one of those nights. Did I mention it was raining? One thing we’ve learned, resourcefulness. Call it a tough life or an enriching one, I call it both. I missed a meeting, the hubby had to be up at 4:30AM for work, the kids were soaked to the bone and on their second shower at about 10PM on a school night but we all made it through.

Needless to say Diva is a happy cow and the baby goats haven’t been screaming at us daily, but one thing is for sure. The only way to get through the tough times it to push through the hard times and I really hope that’s something our kids will understand as they see us work together to work through problems.

Until next time!
